 Seashore
paspalum will be the most environmentally friendly warm-season
turfgrass in the 21st century. This grass can tolerate a wide
range of water resources, including potable water and seawater
as well as variable quality recycled (alternative, gray, effluent,
nonpotable, wastewater, brackish) water. The grass requires
only minimal pesticides and judicious applications of fertilizers.
It is very efficient in the uptake and utilization of critical
fertilizer nutrients. Thus, seashore paspalum can be easily
managed to comply with local, state, federal, and global regulations
dealing with environmental concerns on water quality/quantity
and environmental stewardship issues.
Seashore paspalum will have multiple uses in the turf industry.
It has the leaf texture, quality, and traffic tolerance for
use on golf course greens, tees, fairways, and roughs; on
sports fields including soccer, baseball, and football; in
home lawn and business landscape areas; in municipal parks,
and; on roadsides, especially low drainage ways. It can be
used to clean up polluted or contaminated waters or soils
(bioremediation). It can be effectively used to transition
into wetland sites or other environmentally sensitive areas
to minimize the potential for point and non-point source pollution
or contamination from industrial sites or other problem areas.

TifBlair
centipedegrass was developed from seeds of Common centipedegrass
that had been irradiated with 10,000 rads of Cobalt 60 gamma
radiation for 4 cycles by the USDA-ARS Forage and Turf Research
Unit at Tifton, GA and planted at Blairesville, GA. Seeds were
harvested from plants that survived the 1980 to 1984 winters
to produce TifBlair. TifBlair can be established from seeds
or sod. It is protected by Plant Variety Protection, therefore
it cannot be produced, propagated or sold without permission.
The Turfgrass Group, Inc has the rights to produce TifBlair.
Compared
to common, TifBlair has improved:
Southeast
is a turf-type tall fescue exhibiting shoot density, color,
and quality traits that are intermediate between the forage-types
and the most dark green, highest shoot density turf-types. Relative
to the darkest green and highest shoot density turf-type tall
fescues, Southeast exhibits a moderately dark green color and
moderately high to high shoot density. These traits are believed
by the UGA scientists to be more appropriate for southern conditions
due to: a) reduced heat load in response to less absorption
of solar radiation by the moderate dark green versus darkest
green turf-types, and b) a somewhat less dense canopy may help
reduce high humidity within the canopy that could favor certain
diseases prevalent under hot, humid conditions.
