| Winter annual with basal leaves
from a taproot. Leaves, softly hairy to smooth, linear,
with smooth margins. Flowers in dense spike on hairy,
leafless stalk. Numerous bracts, linear, extended outward
from the flower spike. Reproduces by seed. Found in low
maintenance turfgrasses in most southern states, north
to Michigan, west to Texas, California, the Pacific Northwest
and Hawaii. Also found in Mexico. |
